About Me

My name is Mark Silverthorn.  I spent 12 years as a collection lawyer working for some of Canada's largest collection agencies in the Greater Toronto Area.  I had an epiphany after which I decided to represent consumers struggling with debt.  Over a nine-year period representing consumers across Canada I negotiated hundreds of favourable settlements in which a consumer would make a one-time payment for significantly less than the amount owing--as settlement in full.  In 2010 I wrote The Wolf At The Door:  What To Do When Collection Agencies Come Calling, published by McClelland & Stewart.

Over the years I have become a student of not only the Canadian collection industry but also the Canadian debt relief industry.  I am routinely consulted by the media on matters involving debt, the collection industry, and the debt relief industry.  I have been interviewed on CBC's Marketplace, Breakfast Television, Global National News, and CBC National News.

I am a prolific writer.  I have published over 150 articles on LinkedIn.  Some of these articles fall under the rubric of investigative journalism.  One of my LinkedIn articles was the basis for a story carried by Global National News.  I have also written articles that have been published in Canadian Lawyer, The Law Times, and Insolvency Insider.

In October of 2019, I retired from the practice of law.  My passion for assisting Canadians with debt problems, however, could not be extinguished.  On March 1st of 2021, I launched Debt Coach Silverthorn, an online consulting firm.  At Debt Coach Silverthorn our mantra is empowering Canadians struggling with debt.

My goal is to provide visitors to this website with a significant amount of free content--both articles and YouTube videos--that will assist Canadians facing debt challenges in obtaining optimal results resolving their debt situation.

Please let me know if you would like me to write an article or publish a YouTube video on a particular topic.  If you enjoy watching these videos on the Debt Coach Silverthorn YouTube channel I would invite you to Subscribe to our firm's YouTube channel.

For those of you who want a one-on-one telephone consultation with me, you can schedule a 30-minute telephone call with me for $150.00.  During a telephone consultation, I am available to provide practical advice based upon my three decades of experience in the debt collection and debt relief industries.  Please note that I will not be providing legal representation nor will I be providing legal advice.  Depending upon your particular circumstances, however, I may be in a position to refer you to some legal professionals.

I am happily married, with two daughters, one doing her PhD in France, and the other a trilingual undergraduate student.  I made the mistake of agreeing to provide driving lessons to my youngest daughter during the pandemic.  I am also the proud owner of an American Bulldog whom my wife and I love to pieces.

Rosie, Mark Silverthorn's dog, not only loves to chew items until

they lose their original purpose but also she is a fashionista.
